I posted this on Facebook yesterday, and figured I should probably put it here, too. Sorry if you see it more than once.

If my bathroom scale is to be believed, I've lost 25 pounds since I started tracking in mid-August. I haven't been talking about it much, because almost nothing bores me more than diet/exercise/weight talk, but this seemed like a milestone worth noting.

I completely credit it to starting medication for my ADD, in two main ways: 1) Almost immediately after starting on meds back in May I was able to finally break several bad eating habits I'd been trying to stop for years. 2) Appetite suppression is a known side effect of stimulants. Combined, these have meant I've cut way down on my mindless snacking. I've also had an easier time planning ahead so that I can make smart food choices rather than defaulting to whatever is easiest.

Body: I've been feeling pretty good lately.

Stress Level: 2

Book Review: The Briar King, The Charnel Prince, and The Blood Knight by Greg Keyes, the first three books in his The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone quartet. Very good dark fantasy. Too much to try to summarize, so I'll just say it's a complicated story with interesting characters and good world building. Rating: 7 out of 10. Not loanable on the Kindle as of 1-13-11.

Reading: I started The Born Queen (book 4 of the series above) last night.

Hearing: The sound of my co-workers working.

Etsy Find: Beautiful Wool Coat. I don't need a new winter coat, and this one is on the expensive side, but oh is it ever pretty.

Tonight's Project: The usual Thursday night dinner with the gang. Around that I need to stop and pick up the last few odds'n'ends of stuff for Arisia, mix up some honey mustard to take, and do my packing. I also want to wind the yarn for the project I'm bringing into a ball, and if I have time cast on and stitch a row or two.

Randomness: So in addition to getting more exercise, I'm also trying to change the way I eat. For now, I'm just making a couple of small changes. 1) I'm using My Fitness Pal to track my calories consumed, and trying to stop when (or before) it tells me I've had enough. I've told it my goal is to lose half a pound a week, which seems achievable. 2) I'm trying to drink more water. The rule I'm using for now is that I need to consume as much water as soda. The way I'm doing it is that when I finish a soda I refill the container with water and drink that before I let myself buy another soda. At some point I may up that to 2:1.

My arms are still sore from Tuesday's workout. But, I'm not going to let that stop me from hitting the gym today.

I had my first session with the trainer at the gym today. I think it went pretty well. He gave me a list of which machines to use and what to do on each one. I double checked, and I do get one training session a month, which I think will do a lot to keep me motivated.

Today worked out to roughly a half-session: 5 minutes on the treadmill to start, 1 set of 10 reps on each of 6 machines (under the supervision of the trainer), and then 10 more minutes on the treadmill.

My plan is to go every other day, and to basically double what I did today. So I'll start with 10 minutes on the treadmill, then do 2 sets on each machine, and finish with 20-30 minutes back on the treadmill.

Right now I'm at 214 pounds. My short-term goal is to be under 200. Long term, I'd like to be under 175. Maybe even 150.

Going out for lunch every day has helped with the problem of my day being too long, but I feel bad about spending the money.

Today I tried something new: I had a granola bar for lunch, and spent the remaining 20 minutes of my break going for a walk. I think I'll stick with that, at least a few days a week, although I'm going to bring in fruit in addition to the granola bar.
