I started listening to this awesome podcast today. A Way With Words

It's got me thinking a little bit about the quirky phrases that litter my own speech. Most of the time I'm not even aware that they might be odd until somebody asks me about them. Even then I'm never sure if it's family lingo, something I picked up from an old book, or something that is common in Michigan but not here in New York.

I find I like rap/hip-hop better in other languages. For example, I really enjoyed this NPR Tiny Desk Concert by Ana Tijoux.

I'm listening to a podcast of a concert that Of Montreal did in Washington DC back in September, and I really can't decide if I like them or not.

Instrumentally, they remind me more of the soundtrack to Velvet Goldmine than anything else. Somewhere between Glam Rock and Punk Rock, with a modern gloss.

Lyrically, they're just odd. I can't come up with a better word.

Body: My legs are achy, but not dramatically. I'm also really under-slept.

Stress Level: 5 Somehow I managed to miss not just one, but two emails saying that we had to dress up at work today. >:|

Reading: Inda by Sherwood Smith

Hearing: The Roadhouse

Etsy Find: Silver pendent in a geometric design. It kind of looks like a stylized flower.

Project Follow-up: I didn't get to the mall. Instead, Tom & I did more of the footwork for a new couch. We already figured out which couches we like best at each of several stores, now it's a matter of measuring each of them to figure out if we could get them into the apartment. If we go with a sectional, which seems likely, we also need to figure out what configuration we like.

Tonight's Project: Second attempt at the mall.

Randomness: I need suggestions for a restaurant to go to for my birthday dinner next Friday. I like going places I've never been before, and that are a step or two nicer than the sort of place the gang usually goes on Thursday nights.

Body: My right knee is really bad. I walked too much yesterday afternoon, and then I sat in a funny postion at my desk in the evening. Owie.

Stress Level: 3 Starting something new. Higher number = worse.

Reading: Inda

Hearing: The New York Times Book Review podcast, The Stuff You Should Know podcast

Etsy Find: I'm not a big fan of diamonds, but this is a diamond necklace I like.

Tonight's Project: I'm going to hit the mall after work to pick up a few odd'n'ends.

Randomness: This random question is for the women on my list - If you had to pare your make-up kit down to the bare minimum, what would you keep?

I know I have a lot of friends who love Leonard Cohen's song "Halleluiah."

I heard a wonderful version of it today on episode 14 of the podcast Celtic Roots Radio.

Alleluia, by Fiona Mackenzie.

Body: Both knees are bothering me.

Book Review: I read World Made by Hand: A Novel over the weekend. It was good but... superficial somehow. For all that the topic is pretty serious, the author seems to only touch the surface. 6 out of 10.

Hearing: Nancy Pearl Book Reviews; This American Life (Episode 400 is not one of their best, although the last story was pretty good); and Dan Carlin's show Common Sense. This episode of Common Sense is pretty depressing (starting with "honor" killings in the middle east and going on to human rights in general and what we as a nation can really do about other nations not living up to our standards), and I think when I'm done with it I'm going to put on my "Good Mood Music" playlist and cheer myself up.

Etsy Find: Etched Silver Carpe Diem necklace.

Project Follow-up: I got a little bit of cordialing and a little bit of knitting done this weekend.

Randomness: If you could meet a character from a book, who would it be? Why? What would you want to ask them?

Body: I've been on the verge of a migraine for the last 24 hours, and my right hip is yelling at me every time I stand up.

Book Review: I finished Dead Men's Boots. It was pretty good (7 out of 10), and I have a feeling that if I'd read the earlier books first and known the backstory better I would give it a higher rating.

Reading: I went to sleep without starting a new book.

Hearing: Dan Carlin's show Common Sense; and a few other podcasts. I switched to music in the afternoon.

Etsy Find: Spaceship earrings! I think I need a pair of these to wear at SF cons. :)

Randomness: Recommend me reading material. LJs, other blogs, books, anything at all.

Reading: Dead Men's Boots

Hearing: BBC documentaries

Etsy Find: Carpe Diem Pendant

Project Follow-up: I got nothing done last night.

Tonight's Project: I have no idea what I'm going to do tonight. Maybe some Sims or some knitting.

Randomness: What's your favorite imaginary animal? I'm fond of gryphons. I'm not sure whether I should blame Mercedes Lackey for that or not.
