Victory!
Tom and I ended up going apple picking by ourselves. We ended up with $20 worth of assorted apples. (At $0.89 per pound, I think that works out to around 22 pounds.) A dozen of them have already been turned into apple sauce, and more will make the transition tomorrow. Some of the others will probably be made into apple crisp, especially if Dad sends me his recipe. Apple pie is a possibility, but would require locking the cats in the bathroom while I roll out the crust, unless I use frozen crusts. Not as good, but much easier.

Slice, core, and peel your apples.
Put in a heavy bottomed pan with a little water and sugar.
Cook over medium heat until it looks like apple sauce. (Usually about 20 minutes.)
The ratio I used for yesterday's batch was 12 apples - 1 cup water - 2 TBSP sugar. That was a little sweet for me, so the next batch will probably only have 1 TBSP sugar.
