Liberal v. Conservative

I read The Nation every week (on my Kindle for $1.49 a month). It pretty accurately (not 100%, but close) reflects my views on the world, but doesn't tell me much about the other guy's point of view.

So, I'm wondering if anybody knows what magazine would be the conservative equivalent to The Nation. I'll give it a try, and read it as long as I can stand to.

I don't know anyone who reads it weekly (it is expensive!) but I find the Economist provides me with great insight and perspective from the more conservative side of issues.

I'm going to give it a try. I just want to find a magazine with thoughtful articles. I'm not going to waste my time reading the equivalent of Limbaugh or O'Reilly.

National Review and Weekly Standard are the thoughtful conservative weeklies.

I'm also very fond of the Atlantic Monthly.

I forgot Reason -- that's the one I'd pick. More libertarian than "conservative," I suppose, but then again that's where I tend to fall politically.

Reason seems to be the only one of the suggested titles that's available for the Kindle, so it looks like I'm going with it by default.

I find the National Review to be a better barometer for conservative thinking than most of the other print sources, but that's just me. Maybe I just don't trust anything that Rupert Murdoch has anything to do with. :-)

The Economist is good. It is fiscally conservative and socially liberal, which matches the politics of a large number of Americans. Also, they do a fantastic job of covering international news.

For another opinion on the left, try Mother Jones. They are often farther to the left than The Nation, if it can be possible. :-)

I love Mother Jones, but it doesn't seem to be available for the Kindle. I'm trying to switch to Kindle for anything I'm not likely to re-read (like magazines.)

I don't know that I'd call it farther left than The Nation, but it definitely has a more populist stance.

I asked Gare for input, since you guys seem to talk about this kind of stuff yet identify as opposite ends of the political spectrum. He said the following:

Tell her to look at http://www.nationalreview.com as one possibility.
They're a conservative publication.
http://www.reason.com is a Libertarian publication. A lot of their articles are online.
For stuff further to the right (National Review editorial board is pro-life but favors ending the drug war, for example; so they're Conservative with SOME libertarian leanings), American Spectator or Human Events (http://www.humanevents.com/)

I ended up going with Reason magazine, mostly because it was the only one mentioned that is available for the Kindle.

Since it's not available for the Kindle, I don't think I'll be reading every issue, but I will try to pick up a copy at least every few months. I figure it's a good idea to know what the other side actually thinks about issues, rather than to try to guess.
