I've realized that one of the things that annoys me a little about Laurall K. Hamilton's writing style is that she uses the exact same phrases to describe things every time. It gets a little dull, no matter how interesting the scene itself is.

Yup. She uses "spill" about twice per PAGE.

The one that's really driving me nuts at the moment is how she describes Merry's skin as "glowing as if she contained the full moon" and variations. It's amazing how much more these things stand out for me when I'm listening to the audio books than when I'm reading them.

In the Anita Blake books, her boss for the police stuff, how he doesn't say goodbye on the phone? That is like three times in EVERY BOOK. And her descriptions of Edward liking to kill monsters because humans weren't challenging enough? Makes me want to run screaming. However, I do enjoy reading them when I need a mindless vampire story...

I haven't read many of the Anita Blake books, but the Merry Gentry books have been good brain candy for while I'm working.

Hamilton makes these wonderful worlds, and she tries to tell good stories, but she is not a technicallly good writer.

*grin* yeah... My mother was reading Clan of the Cave Bear when I was 8 or 9. So I read it till I caught up, then took turns reading aloud, until she decided that it was a bad idea. (I was reading when they were talking about the severed head of the human sacrifice, and it was all a bit much for me at the time) The rest of the book, and the next 2 in the series became books she read to me.

I later went back and re-read Valley of the Horses and figured out why she'd stop reading for minutes on end...

I tried reading her once. I didn't get past the first few chapters. AWFUL!

Problem is, I have read all the books. In regards to the last book in the series - I can't believe I waited 10 years to find the sex of her second baby.
They have gotten progressivly worse and worse. And the same paragraphs repeated word for word chapter by chapter!!!
Oy, with the bad.

Reoccurring events annoy me much less than than an author who uses the exact same phrases to describe things over and over again.

I've rather given up on Laurall K. Hamilton in recent years.

I read your user info and felt that I wanted to add you as a friend. I am a bit of a bookworm myself and enjoy reading others ideas about books.

Just think of it as being LIKE HOMER. :P

Repetition as a literary device is a valid concept, repetition because you're too lazy to come up with a new phrase to describe something is annoying.

I'm sure you can guess which I think Hamilton does. :-)

Hee. I'm not a fan anyway--the first Anita Blake book...no, no thank you. I gave it a shot, at least. I keep telling myself that, instead of "You can't get that time back."
