ValueOptions just asked me to apply for a permanent position! In the words of my supervisor "the position is yours to lose."

Yay!!!!!!!!

I think your hat was in the mini-fridge that we delivered last year, in the workings to reduce the rattling.

-Tom

[identity profile] purpura.livejournal.com 2007-04-29 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, I checked the mini fridge, it's not there. I can't think of where it would have gone either...

[identity profile] jennythe-reader.livejournal.com 2007-04-29 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Then Tom & I are out of ideas. That was the only place we could think of.

[identity profile] dustkitten.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay!

(Oh, and Matt wants to know how many books you read last year.)

[identity profile] jennythe-reader.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
:-)

How many books? Well, according to LibraryThing I've read 80 since December 14, 2006.

That's 4 months, 20 a month, so a year at that rate works out to 240 books. That feels about right. My guess for a full year would probably be somewhere around 200.

[identity profile] dustkitten.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone loves that LibraryThing, but I am wary of anything that catalogs my stuff, you know? I always think, "Well, someone will see my list and want to break into my house." Yes, I am that paranoid. And then they're realize that a good half of my books are library discards and aren't worth a thing and--yeah, I should just STOP THAT.

Oh, and thanks.

[identity profile] jennythe-reader.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Being paranoid that someone will steal your books is a little silly.

In all seriousness, LibraryThing is pretty cool. You should poke around and check it out. I think my favorite feature is the Suggestions. It makes suggestions based on what books you have in your catalog, and the more books you add, the better the suggestions get.

Here's a link to mine, if you want to check it out: http://www.librarything.com/catalog.php?view=jennythereader

[identity profile] dustkitten.livejournal.com 2007-04-28 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I think it's more that I went from having very little (in terms of anything), to moving in with someone who had a ton of stuff, and so on. Also, I live next door to a (former?) juvenile deliquent, so...

All my books were together by genre, and then alphabetical by author, so it's not like I was not sure what I had or didn't have. (Had to put some of them in storage, but will probably be getting them back out soon.) The suggestion thing? I dunno. If suggestion things hear names like "Jennifer Crusie," they start suggesting other chick lit authors, and I think most chick lit is painful* and don't want to plow through a bunch of it just to find one thing I like. I prefer browsing through the library and getting the occasional rec from a friend.

*Sophie Kinsella made me hate the female half of the human race.

[identity profile] jennythe-reader.livejournal.com 2007-04-28 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It bases its suggestions on everything you have listed, so if you're worried about 1 book twisting it in a direction you don't really like than just wait to add that one until you already have a couple dozen that are more typical of you.

I love browsing too, but when I do that I tend to end up reading the same books over and over again. LibraryThing is a really good way for me to find new stuff.

A couple years ago I got 112 books for $7 at a library sale, so I've been really good about not rereading. Now I wouldn't say I've read those 112 books, but because I feel guilty about not reading at least half of them, I've been good about getting new books. "But this one looks good! I can put aside Erdrich and Highsmith for a while! It's not like I'm REREADING or anything."

I kept track of what I read last year, and occasionally threw in a comment if the book was good, bad, or something else. If you want to check it out, it's here:

Yay! *fingers crossed*

I am behind and reading my FL backward. Is ValueOptions an insurance kind of thing? or something different?

They provide Mental Health & Substance Abuse coverage. I do data entry for individual cases.

(Anonymous) 2007-04-27 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I thought they sounded familiar. *coughs* I think I'm in your database somewhere...

[identity profile] jennythe-reader.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry. Even if I did stumble across you, I wouldn't say anything about it to anyone.

[identity profile] bodhichitta0.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, that was me with the anonymous thing. Sorry, got logged out somehow?

[identity profile] stefka.livejournal.com 2007-04-28 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I trust you handed in the application before you left for the day?

Felicitations!

[identity profile] jennythe-reader.livejournal.com 2007-04-28 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
It was a online thing that took me about 10 minutes to do, but yup! More important, I finished it before my supervisor left for his 2 week vacation.

Yay! Fingers crossed for you.

[identity profile] jennythe-reader.livejournal.com 2007-04-28 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! So, why did you want to know about the books?

[personal profile] nounsandverbs 2007-04-28 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
:) Because A said, "I wonder how many books [livejournal.com profile] jennythe_reader read last year," and I said, "I don't know -- a lot. Why don't you ask her?"

[identity profile] jennythe-reader.livejournal.com 2007-04-28 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes perfect sense. Half the reason I signed up for LibraryThing was to help me keep track of what books I read, and how many I read.

[identity profile] dustkitten.livejournal.com 2007-04-29 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No, actually what A said was something like "I wonder if I've read more books than someone who called herself THE READER." For I am an egomaniac.

Telaina says I cheat, though, because I was marking down poems to keep track for classes. I really need to change where it says "416+ books" on my journal layout. It should really say "416+ works."

[identity profile] lilianafriendly.livejournal.com 2007-04-28 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurray! Good luck! :)

[identity profile] jennythe-reader.livejournal.com 2007-04-28 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Is very cool.

[identity profile] aphiorogue.livejournal.com 2007-04-29 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
who is your supervisor? I worked there for about 2 years.

[identity profile] jennythe-reader.livejournal.com 2007-04-29 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
His first name is Chris, but I haven't actually heard his last name.
