This idea literally jolted me out of a sound sleep

2 hours or $20 dollars:

Over the last two years we've had ample proof that Americans will work incredibly hard and put an amazing amount of energy into a cause. Now that the election is over, should we really let all that passion dissipate?

Of course not.

I challenge everyone reading this to, by the end of the month, donate either 2 hours of your time or $20.00 of your money to a cause that you believe in.

I'll be making my donation to Literacy New York.

If you decide to participate please copy this into your own blog, changing my charity to your own choice.

It is easy to hide behind a check. Why don't you be more active and actually donate your time as a tutor to help people learn how to read.

It is easy to hide behind an anonymous comment.

I haven't yet decided whether time or money would make a bigger difference. I like to think that I'd be able to communicate my passion for reading, but the few times in the past that I've tried to act as a teacher it hasn't worked very well.

The problem with donating money rather than your own time is that only a percentage of your donation will actually go to said charity with the rest being used to pay salaries, fund lobbyists and pay for advertising. When you actually donate your own time as a volunteer you have control over your own actions and can take pride in something other than a tax write off.

Not true.

If you donate to a local branch of your charity, there's a better chance of the funds being used directly.

Also, if you donate THINGS instead of money, you know it'll be used the way you want, and you can still get the write off!

I think that both time and money are needed by many organizations and that an individual needs to decide for him/herself which one to GIVE based not only on what is needed by the recipient of the gift but also on what that individual has available to give at that particular moment. It is important to remember that when you donate your money you are, indirectly, donating your time because you had to work to get that money in the first place and so you have effectively donated your time! Just thought that I'd throw my two cents in there!

PS - Of course, donating items is valuable as well as it helps the giver, the recipient, and the environment!

I've made over $400 worth of donations to the American Legion. Does that count? ;>

If you think it's a good cause, then it counts!
