And also cast on and purl!

[livejournal.com profile] stefka taught me the basics over the weekend, with some help from Kim. When I got home today I refreshed my memory by watching the videos on KnittingHelp.com and as of this moment I have almost two inches of something that looks vaguely scarf-like.

I'm still having a hard time keeping the tension even, and I keep dropping stitches at the ends of rows, but I know that both of those problems are just a matter of needing more practice. I also realize I need different needles. I bought the cheapest size 8's I could find, since that's the most commonly recommended size for learning on. The problem with them is that they are 14 inches long. That's literally the same length as my forearm and hand combined! I'm going to buy some 8 or 10 inch needles and switch them out. I think that will help quite a bit.

Yup. And at some point I want to learn how to crochet, too. Is your Dad a decent teacher?

Yah he is. Back when I crocheted more regularly he taught me. But I've lost all of it thru non-practice.

Cool. Once I'm confident enough with knitting that I don't think I'll confuse myself, I may ask him if he'll teach me.

My grandmother taught me the bare basics of crochet years upon years ago, but I don't remember any of it.
