I've realized in the last year or so that as a 5' 2.75" curvy woman I have two choices when it comes to clothing my particular body. 1) I can dress to accentuate my curves, or 2) I can dress to blur them. What I can't do is hide them.

So for everyday I try to wear boot-cut jeans designed for "pear-shaped" women. They fit properly at my waist, are snug on my butt and hips, but get looser as they go down my legs. This emphasizes the curves I like, but makes it unclear how big around my calves are. I look for v- and scoop-neck shirts that are loose but not baggy or the wrong length. Again, this draws the eye to the curve I like (my chest), while softening the line of my stomach enough that it isn't instantly obvious how much of it there is.

For special occasion clothes I kind of go the opposite direction. I buy very full skirts and very snug tops, usually in the form of dresses. The full skirts make it hard to tell how much is me and how much is the skirt, while the tops emphasize how narrow my waist is compared to both my hips and my chest.

Unfortunately I do still own and wear clothing that goes against my personal style preferences. Sometimes, I even buy them. I can't afford to replace my whole wardrobe, and when I do shop I'm limited to what's available.

Following up on this post, I've narrowed it down to three boxes that seem like they'd be good choices.

1. The Little Black Box
2. BlissMoBox
3. My Dream Sample Box

I also decided that rather than try to arrange in advance to split a subscription, I'll just sell anything I don't want to friends who do. To make it fair, anything I sell will be at what it cost me or less if I opened it before realizing I didn't want it.

So (for example) if the box I decide on costs $15 a month, and has 10 items in it, I'd offer the things I didn't want for $1.50.

Does that seem fair? Has anyone else tried sample boxes? What did you think?

After reading this thread about sample boxes over on the BPAL forums, I kind of want to subscribe to one.

The problem is that judging by the reviews on that same thread, I'm probably only going to like about half of what I get (on average). While that's still more cost effective than going out and buying full size things at the store (and ending up using less than a sample size amount of most of them), it's not ideal.

So, if I did end up getting a sample box of some sort, would anybody be interested in splitting it with me?

I can think of a couple different ways to manage the split, but we can figure out exactly how to do it once we've picked which box to get and know (generally) what sort of stuff it will have and how much it will cost.

I have tomorrow off from work. I did not ask for the day off, and resent being told I have to use vacation time for it. As much as I dislike "use it or lose it" policies, I think it would annoy me less than this policy of "some people are letting too much vacation time accumulate, so everybody has to use two days worth on days that we choose."

Anyway.

My to do list for tomorrow is:
- Take Skif to the vet. He's due for some shots and a general checkup.
- Go jeans shopping. I had one pair die on me last weekend, and another is getting pretty worn out, so I need at least one new pair
- Get a haircut. My ends are looking pretty ragged, so I'm going to get an inch or two cut off.
- Get a manicure. (Second most likely to get dropped if time is short.)
- Grocery shopping. It's always a readjustment when the farm share ends and I have to start buying vegetables again.
- Finish the [livejournal.com profile] 2xcreative project (part 1). I just need to draw in the tree trunk on one side of the paper, and then do the embroidery.
- Pick a project or recipe from my pinterest boards and do it. (This is the one most likely to get skipped if I run out of time.)
- Make dinner

Next Friday, work is encourging everybody to wear a jersey from their favorite sports team.

I debating between an MSU shirt, a Pennsic University shirt, and a Transylvania Polygnostic shirt (again, I'd probably have to make one).

The MSU shirt is probably easiest, but not nearly as much fun as either of the more geeky options.

What do you guys think I should go with?

The blues and purples lasted a month, but at this point they seem to have all washed out. Right now I'm trying to decide what to do next.

I'm leaning towards re-doing the fun colors once or twice more, and then switching to henna until the bleached parts grow out. But I'm always open to other suggestions.

What parts of your wardrobe do you have a hard time convincing yourself are worth spending significant amounts of money on?

For me it's shoes. I know intellectually that if I replaced my everyday shoes more often and with higher quality ones my feet would be happier. I know that if I bought better quality dress shoes I'd have more fun on those occasions I dress up... but I almost never can make myself do it.

What about the reverse? What parts of your wardrobe do you spend more than you should on?

My current weakness is for fun socks. They can be cheap enough that it's not a huge waste of money, but I do have enough that storing them can sometimes be a problem.

[livejournal.com profile] purpura took this picture of me with my newly colorful hair. I had blue and purple streaks put into the under-layer of my hair on Saturday. I deliberately chose to do it in a fairly subtle way. For everyday I like the idea of people not being sure what they saw at first glance, and if I want to make it more obvious I can just pull the top layer of hair back in a clip.

Or rather, highlights in an unnatural color.

I've been thinking about doing this for quite a while, and I finally have the appointment for this Saturday. The only problem is that I still haven't decided which color(s) to do. I'm leaning to a combination of dark blue and blue-green, but other opinions are always good.

For folks I haven't seen in real life, that's me in the icon. My hair is naturally dark brown, and it gets light brown/blonde highlights if I spend lots of time in the sun. I have blue-green eyes, and a light complexion.

An Idea

Following up on some of the comments I've gotten in my last two posts, I've had an idea for a new community here on LJ.

Would any of you be interested in a community for discussing fashion and appearence from the point of view of grownups who are trying to stand out from the crowd. A community for grownups who are still figuring out what the rules are, and which ones they want to follow and which ones they want to ignore.
