At the moment I'm on 4 general purpose networks - Twitter, Facebook, LJ, and Google+. I also participate in a few special interest networks and some forums, but we're not talking about them today.
So this is how I use them:
- Twitter: I read it occasionally, but almost never remember to post anything there. I might actually delete the account sometime soon.
- Facebook: Quick updates about what I'm up to, and links to interesting things I've found online. Mostly things that I think will interest my family and not so geeky friends and acquaintances.
- Google Plus: More or less the same type of thing as Facebook, but with a more geeky slant.
- LJ: Anything that I can't say all I want to on the topic in a sentence or two. I cross-post it to Facebook and/or Google+ as seems appropriate.
If anybody wants a Google+ invite, let me know. (I'll delete this sentence when mine are all gone.)

Date: 2011-07-18 06:03 pm (UTC)LJ: Central clearing house for anything I want to say to the world. I have my beta-reading community here, too.
FB: I have some people through which this is a primary contact.
Twitter: My agent suggested I be on it. I see no utility in it at all and forget I have it often.
LinkedIn: contacts with business associates.
I use Usenet more than any of these newcomers.

Date: 2011-07-18 06:48 pm (UTC)Facebook, I use the least for anything but games. It's mostly family and extended family...basically people I KNOW don't share my views and I don't want to deal with the crap involved in sharing those views with them. (I can crosspost with a hashtag from Twitter to Facebok so I do that occasionally for family sharing info.)
LJ, I pretty much post whatever I want...as you said, anything that takes more than a sentence or two. And for venting my frustration for the people on my FB. :)
Tumblr, I have and read but rarely post new content, just reblog stuff that interests me.
Google-Plus...I really like the format, but am still working out what to do with it. I'd probably use it the way I used FB before my family swarmed me there since I can filter it more.

Date: 2011-07-19 06:55 am (UTC)Facebook is for talking to former colleagues and people I went to high school with. No one I currently work with is ever friended on Facebook - for their sake as much as for mine. I tend to be more loose and frivolous about what I post there.
I have two Twitter accounts which I post on only occasionally. One is public, in which I identify myself by my real name and occupation. I use it to read news, and to post things about the news that I'm comfortable saying publicly. The other Twitter is private. I use it to read interesting people and talk about writing.
I have a LinkedIn account which I never use, but I maintain it in case I need it someday - if god forbid I lose my job, for instance.
I'm still feeling out Google+, but so far it has the best aspects of all the other accounts. I wish it were available on more mobile devices, but that'll be self-correcting as time goes on. I also wish my workplace would upgrade its rinky-dink version of Internet Explorer so I could read G+ at work.
