Aug. 4th, 2006 05:42 pmI found out the other day that my high school class is having a 10th reunion this year. Yesterday I confirmed that this would be happening next Saturday, on the 12th. That's right, one week from now. I'd like to go, since there are about a half-dozen people I regret losing touch with and maybe twice that many that I'm curious what they've been up to. The 12th is the day that Tom & I are/were planning on leaving for Pennsic.
Unfortunately, my budget and logistical concerns seem to prevent me from going. Timing wise, the only way I'll be able to go is to fly out of Albany (or a nearby airport) on the evening of the 11th. I just spent the last hour going through ticket sites. There don't seem to be any flights directly from Albany to Lansing (not much of a surprise), but as far as I could tell there aren't any direct flights from Albany to anywhere in the state of Michigan except Detroit. If Dad or one of my brothers is willing to go to Detroit to pick me up then the trip to Michigan becomes simply a matter of finding the money ($300+, depending on... ten thousand things). If nobody is willing to go to Detroit, then I might still be able to get a flight into Michigan, by way of Chicago or some other transfer point, but it will add significantly to both the time and cost.
Even assuming I could get to East Lansing in a timely fashion, there then develops the issue of how to get from there to Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania for my regular vacation. I checked Google Maps, and it tells me that EL is a 5+ hour drive from Pennsic. Would someone be willing to drive me all the way? Partway and meet Tom or one of my friends? I'd prefer that to happen on Sunday, but would understand if it couldn't until Monday.
All this boils down to: there are folks from school that I'd like to see again, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle/expense.
EDIT: There's a flight from Albany to Detroit for only $145! The catch? It leaves at 5:30 in the morning on the 11th. If I'd had more notice, I could have arranged to get Friday off of work. Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EDIT 2: For $290 there's a flight from Albany that leaves at 7:30 am on the 12th, which would get me into Detroit at 12:30. Under ideal conditions, it's a 90 minute drive from the airport to EL. The reunion starts at 7:00. I'd have 4ish hours to get ready once I got back to EL. Do-able.
