Hair change

I'm thinking of doing something new and different to my hair. Either dying it an unusual color, or cutting it short.

Both have advantages and disadvantages:

Dye
Pros:
  1. Easier to undo/cover up if I don't like it
  2. Will wear/wash out relatively quickly
Cons:
  1. My hair has never been any other color, so I don't know how I'd look
Cut
Pros:
  1. I already know that I look pretty good with shorter hair
Cons:
  1. I've had short hair before, so it doesn't really count as doing something new and different.
  2. If I do go with a very different style, instead of the same basic style only chin length instead of mid-back length, I'll be stuck with it for months.  If I hate it, that would suck.
What do you guys think?

EDIT  Any males out there who have an opinion?  If you do, I'd like to hear it.

Go for it! Both the cut and the color!

What color are you thinking of?

What about highlights? You could start with a moderate difference between your hair colour and the highlight colour and see how you like it. What about some chunks of colour instead of a full head's worth?

If you do go with dye, DEFINITELY have a professional do it - then if it isn't the way you want it when it's done, they will have to go back and fix it! Home dye jobs made my hair really awful until I let the whole lot grow out again, which took months.

One of the pros to a new style of hair is... it's hair. It will grow back. Your not stuck with it forever.
I would recommend going to a real beautician, not a super-cuts kind of place. Something where the people will listen to you when you tel them what you want. What me? Have had a abd experience with that sort of thing? You betcha!

Probably some shade of red. Natural or un-... I still haven't decided.

Go for it! You're a pretty girl, but you do hide behind the long hair.

Red, with a longish bob? I can so see that!

Highlights are another idea I'm considering. They don't really meet the "something really different" standard though. On the other hand, a bob with highlights might look pretty good.

There's no way I'd try to dye my own hair, at least while I'm still figuring out how I want it to look. Once I do have the look nailed I might try it at home, but only if it's a fairly simple one.

Definitely going to a real beauty shop. There's a place in Colonie Center that I like. I forget what the name is, but it's on the lower level near Macy's.

I like having long hair, because it gives me more style options, but I never end up doing anything with it.

If you're going to dye, see if the beauty place has hair samples that show what the color will be like afterward. They're pretty accurate. That should give you something to work with in terms of figuring out what you'll look like afterwards. Personally, I love the fact that I'm now half-redhead.

That's a good idea. It hadn't occurred to me that they'd have samples like that.

Some do, some don't. You'll have to check with your salon of choice.

You have pretty hair the way it is.

What sort of things would you want to be able to do with your hair? This may effect cutting and styling choices.

That is of course the problem with long hair. We find one style or way of fixing our hair that works well, and stick with it forever...

Not sure about coloring... colors that will still look natural are likely to be too subtle to constitute a BIG change.

When I want it out of the way I put it in a ponytail, and sometimes I clip it up when I want to be a little dressy.

If it's short just getting it out of the way won't be an issue.

There are actually a couple of styles that I like better when my hair is shorter. Headbands and scarves among them.
