Does anybody know if I need to pre-heat the oven in order to broil? If so, how long does it usually take?

I don't generally preheat to broil, but certainly turning it on 2-3 minutes before helps. JMHO :)

my apologies, but info is no less correct. as broil is 'apply big flame/heat from above' vs. 'stick in a hot box' one merely needs to 'light/heat the torch,' vs. 'heat up all the air of a whole box'.

Yes and it depends on the oven. It's also good to note where the heating element is in your unit. You'll probably want the foodstuffs closer to it.
