([(time x wage) + materials] x 2) + etsy fee = selling price
Terms:
Time: amount of time it takes to apply the color layer, + gluing time of 1 minute per square inch.
Wage: $6.00/hour for now. I will adapt this number.
Materials: The cost of the item I'm covering + $0.10 per square inch to be covered (rounded).
Esty fee: $0.20 per item listed, plus 3.5% of the price when an item sells.
The gluing time was arrived at by doing a single layer of glue on each of 9 similarly sized items. This took 18 minutes, giving an average time of 2 minutes for a single layer on a single item. Since I normally do about 10 layers of glue, this works out to 20 minutes total gluing time on a approximately 20 square inch item. This further reduces to 1 minute total gluing time per square inch.
So, using the revised formula, the same chest that I calculated a price for yesterday would work out to $33.11 with the color finding time; $23.80 without. Those prices seem much more reasonable.

Date: 2009-01-10 10:36 pm (UTC)This icon is of a shirt that I embroidered for a friend's daughter. Less than 3 inches square, but it took several days. So not worth trying to sell, especially if you charge what it's really worth.

Date: 2009-01-10 10:46 pm (UTC)I bet. I don't knit, but I know enough about it that my first question when I see something intricate is almost always "how long did that take you?"
