Up in the sky, near the sun? If so, it's called a sun dog (sometimes written as one word), and there are often two -- one on either side of the sun. They're not particularly common, so if you saw one, cool!
This was about the same height as the sun, but not super near it. It was on the edge of a cloud, so I'm thinking I just happened to be at the right angle to see the sunlight through the more diffuse parts of the cloud.
Definitely a sun dog. I've seen 'em that way, too. They don't have to be particularly close; the atmospheric conditions just have to be right. You get moon dogs now and then, too, but they're a moonglow shade of white, no rainbows. And not as common as rings. There was a HUGE ring last night.
