At least a month, more if possible -- I have to put in a request, which then has to be approved. Usually it is, but the more lead time I have, the better.
Well, the next con I'm going to (probably) is Readercon (http://readercon.org/index.htm), in early July. They don't have much up yet about this years program, but you can get an idea for what it is by looking over the programs for the last few years.
Hmmm, I'm already asking for the previous (July 4th) weekend off, to go to Glen Linn. But I've certainly worked up enough brownie points with my bosses to at least make the request.
If you want to come, I'd be glad to have the company. Although given that you aren't super into science fiction books, it might not be the best fit. Arisia (http://2010.arisia.org/), in mid-January, has more movie related panels and more evening activities/parties.
Oh, but I do love sci-fi, and always have. More to the point, I love hearing writers talk about writing. And y'know, I'd like to be one of those writers at some point ...
