Which is finer, fingering weight, lace weight, or sock weight? Would any (or all) of them be good thicknesses for embroidering with?

I see all this beautiful hand dyed yarn for sale on Etsy, and want to play with it. Until I actually get around to learning how to knit or crochet, working it into my embroidery seems like my best bet.

Fingering and sock are almost identical. Laceweight is much finer. Cobweb is finest of all. Fingering is...oh, maybe a little finer than one strand of that three-ply tapestry wool. I'd do surface embroidery with laceweight.

What are you embroidering? I use fairly sturdy stuff for embroidering garb, for instance, but would go for finer material on some items, and on pretty-but-not-for-wearing items.

I don't have any specific project in mind. Just trying to figure out what to have in my stash.
