Home From the Doctor's

So, I'm home from my appointment with the gastroenterologist.

He basically agreed that surgery is the best option, and that I should have it done as soon as I can, before it becomes an emergency.

Monday morning I'll be calling the doctor sunatrya recommended and trying to schedule my Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal, for those not up on the medical jargon).

Fun times.

I've known lots of people who've had their gall bladders out, including my mom. You'll feel SO MUCH BETTER when it's out!

1) I'm so sorry you have to have surgery, hon.

2) I had a laparoscopy in 1987; it wasn't bad AT ALL, but my stomach was pretty sore, after. I'm pretty sure they've gotten even better at it over 22 years.

2) My brother-in-law had laparoscopic surgery a few years ago, and he said that the aftermath didn't really hurt, but you are really weak. He had trouble sitting up to get out of bed. My only real worry is if they end up having to switch to a open surgery halfway through. It apparently can take weeks get healed enough to go back to normal life after that.

I understand that worry; I had the same thing.

If it helps, a buddy of mine had emergency gall bladder surgery and was instantly better and recovered quickly, and he was not exactly in peak physical condition.

Also, try rolling instead of sitting. Roll to your side, push up with your arms and and then pivot with your hips to help you get up. Muuuuch easier when you're having belly or back pain.

One question. I've never had to do anything like this before, and I don't know if I need to call the surgeon directly, or if I should go through my regular doctor and have him contact the surgeon. Calling the surgeon myself seems more likely, but I'm not sure.

I'd try calling his office... if they tell you that you need a referral, just call up one of the doctors you've seen about this and have them FAX one over.
