Today Tom & I went out looking at furniture. We didn't buy anything today, but we found several things that will make our lives easier and our apartment more pleasant when we do buy them. The two things at the top of our list are a second dresser and a dining table. They're about equal priority, but we have a better idea of what we want in a table.

Our first stop was a store in Mechanicville that I'd been hearing ads for this week. They were having a 50% off sale, but the sale prices were still slightly higher than Taft and much higher than Huck Finn's. They also didn't have anything we really liked the looks of.

After that we decided to stop at Huck Finn's here in Albany. There we found several different dining sets that we like, with the best being a 30" by 48" rectangle with very dark legs and a lighter top for $200, including 4 chairs. We also looked at the bedroom furniture, but didn't see any dressers that we liked enough to pay the asking price for.

We also went over to the unfinished wood section of the store and had a pleasant surprise: We could get a very nice dresser for less than $200, if we were willing to stain it ourselves. They also had dining tables, but they were much more expensive that the finished ones and did not include chairs. The only unfinished table that tempted us was one with very large fold-down leaves, it was only about 10" by 30" inches when the leaves were down, but opened up to at least 30" by 50", probably more. We probably won't be getting that one though, as it's almost $400 to start with, and we would still need to get chairs.

Also in the unfinished section of Huck Finn's, we found CD and Video/DVD cases in several different sizes, with the largest running around $50. Tom and I are thinking that we'll get one of those first, to practice our staining technique on before we get the dresser.

I'm going to try to go out to Taft on Monday and double check their prices, and also find out how a new purchase would interact with the line of credit we got for the mattress.

We read the instructions on the can of stain, and it seems pretty straightforward. If our first attempt flops, we'll probably be looking for help then.

Can I tell you how much we miss Huck Finn's? We bought half our furniture there, once upon a time, and we did stain it ourselves. Tung Oil is your friend.

Tom & I love Huck Finn's. We've gotten two bookcases there already, and will be getting another as soon as we figure out where it's going to live.

We found this stain and poly in one product at Lowe's that was super easy to use and apply. We love Lowes and should buy stock in it we are there so much. Staining isn't hard as long as you finish each section in one shot. You and Tom will be jealous, Howie is building a full wall bookcase in our new livingroom and it will be our library. So exciting!! His parents are bringing more books this week too! Still need dressers though Emily has two and we have none. Can't find any reasonably priced ones we both agree on. Always agree on the million dollar ones. Oh, well. Wish you better luck! ~S

Don't forget to check out garage and yard sales, Good Will, Salvation Army and places like that. Many times you can find excellent quality furniture in places like that for much lower prices. Even if it needs some refinishing or painting or staining - you might get much better quality for less mone. Love, Hugs, and Prayers, Moms Cerul
