jennythereader: (Bear: Take Time To Smell The Flowers)

One of the things I really like about the new place is that it has a raised garden bed already set up that I can use.

The problem is that I have no idea what to plant in it.

Does anybody have any suggestions for vegetables or herbs that can be planted this late in the season and that do OK in the shade?

I think I'd prefer stuff I could cook with.

Basil, tomatoes. Most herbs are fairly hardy actually and should do well.

Herbs are also pretty cheap, so if they don't grow I won't have wasted tons of money.

Look to your spice rack for ideas and plant what you cook with now. Branch out after you have those established and you'll always have a good supply of your favorites.

I saw that garden and thought of you immediately. The only thing I'm finding online is leafy greens like kale and lettuce.

We already get so much of that stuff in the farm box, I don't think I need to plant more.

Most vegetables and herbs don't do well in the shade, unfortunately. You're best off going to your local garden center and seeing if they have suggestions of any shade-tolerant cultivars.

My deck is part-sun, part-shade, and I don't even bother with veggies and herbs for that reason. They just don't grow or produce.

That's part of the plan for the weekend, but I figured it would hurt to ask the internet. :)

peas, beans, radishes... all quick growing as well. Oregano, parsley, Mint(but only if you REALLY like mint because it tends to take over and is hard to get rid of.)

Radishes are a good idea. Both Tom & I like them in salads and stir-fry.
