That was one of the least fun nights I've ever spent. I think I may have gotten as much as 4 hours sleep, in many little chunks.

Our housemate Kailey noticed yesterday that Ender has worms (no idea how he got them, he's an indoor cat). So he's locked up on the screened-in porch off of the bedroom until that's resolved. (Kailey is taking him to the vet this morning. She has the morning off, and this way Tom & I don't have to miss any work.) He cried all. night. long. Any little noise triggered 20 minutes of plaintive meowing. So that was Ender's contribution.

Skif "helped" by sleeping on the pillow next to my head (usually Ender's spot) and growling like a monster every time Socks (Kailey's cat) came within 10 feet. There's nothing quite so disconcerting as waking up to a noise like two pieces of granite rubbing together 3 inches from your nose. He sounded like a demon from the depths.

It's easy for indoor cats to get worms either from fleas (which happens to indoor cats as much as outdoor cats since you can easily carry the larva or eggs in from outside on your clothing), or even something as simple as catching mice. Many parasites need that second incubation before they hit adult and able to infect.

Sounds like Skif and Socks need to spend some quality time together and sort things out.

We're thinking Tom may have brought something in with him from his most recent search and rescue outing.

Not that it matters much exactly where the cat got them, since it sounds like there isn't much we can do to prevent it.

If the vet doesn't suggest de-worming the other two cats, you should ask about that. My understanding is that worms are easily transmitted back and forth - and depending on variety, humans can become infected too, so a ton of hand scrubbing, cat pan bleaching, and scooping wearing rubber gloves for a while.

They do, just please not 6 inches from my nose at 3 in the morning when I'm already exhausted.

Kailey is pretty sure it's tapeworm, which is not directly contagious. We're keeping an eye on the other two, though.

Me too. One night like that was more than enough.
