I've pretty much decided that I'm going to get myself a new Kindle by the end of the year.

Right now, the new touch screen model that they just announced is the front runner. On the other hand, the Kindle Fire is calling my name.

I'll probably waffle until some time in December, and end up going with the Touch. :)

I would, at a minimum, wait to see more feedback on how the touch keyboard will work ( or not work ) on the touch. What does the new touch offer over the kindle you have?

It's not broken in a way that is annoying but still useable.

My current Kindle is flakey, randomly turning itself off while I'm trying to read. The battery life is down to about a third of what it should be, and that's after Jeff replaced it for me. The navigational 5-way button is cracked right down the middle. The other buttons sometimes need pressing 2 or 3 times before they do what they're supposed to do.

Personally I would wait till at least early next year before taking the plunge on "1st generation" hardware and firmware for this new line. Wait till they at least get through a revision of software to get the major kinks worked out. By then there might even be a complete alternate firmware for the fire based on the "rooting" of the device which might swing preference to it.

I probably will wait to order until after Christmas. There's always the possibility of getting Amazon gift cards, which would help defray the cost. :)

And you realize I have no idea what that last sentence is about, right?

Sorry, the Kindle Fire is an android device. Like the nook, it may be possible to "root" the device in order to install newer software and software that is not approved by Amazon ( the nook app for instance ).

I have no interest in doing that.
