Only somebody from the UK would refer to "the Detroit, Chicago, Boston area."

(I'm sure Americans make similarly silly statements about Europe all the time. This just jumped out at me.)

Pretty much.

Totally off topic, but can I ask you a question about your family? Are they originally from here in the Hudson Valley?

My dad was born in Albany. My mom was born in Brooklyn, moved to Norway, came back here. They spent more time in this area than anywhere else, certainly.

I spent time with my family this weekend, and my grandmother told me that through my grandfather I'm related to the Spoor family, who lived in either Catskill or Coxsackie 100+ years ago. If your family has been in the area that long, it's entirely possible that we're distant cousins. Which would be sort of cool.

I also learned that my husband now works at the same company you do.

I don't think it's *that* Spoor family, then. There were/are a fair number of Spoors in this area -- it's a Dutch name and the Dutch were predominant in this area for a long time. My dad's family lived in Albany, but had emigrated here from Holland in the early part of the 20th century. (I was going to say "of the century" but realized that this would now refer to the 2000s...)

Yes, and that's the second time we've been working in the same place, as he used to work at Borders. I hadn't realized you were married to him, though. :)

He never worked at Borders, but I did for several years.

That makes sense. Too bad. It would have been sort of cool to be able to say "my (distant) cousin, the author."
