I saw the nurse practioner at my PCP's office today. This was supposed to end with me getting a prescription for ADHD meds.

Instead, I learned that my counselor's letter had not yet gotten to my doctor's office. And without that, the NP wasn't willing to prescribe anything. I understand this, but it was annoying.

It was also annoying that she didn't seem to believe that I could have an attention disorder that was bad enough to need meds. After all, I'd managed to graduate high school and to hold down a full time job. I didn't get the impression she knew much about ADHD in women or in adults.

They also took a few vials of blood for thyroid and other tests, which I wasn't expecting. I'm feeling a tiny bit loopy.

The medical profession is completely obnoxious sometimes. Do you have the H part, or just ADD? She may have been thrown because the Hyperactive part isn't very typical in women. Or she could just have been totally ignorant. Hope all the people involved get their asses in gear.

Just the ADD part.

I think part of the problem was that I hadn't been expecting the questions she was asking, so I hadn't prepared to answer them. That meant I wasn't answering very coherently or convincingly. Ironically, my ADD may have prevented me from convincing my doctor that I have ADD.

They should have picked up on the coherent part, at least. Buttheads! I hope you get what you need. :(

There is the added wrinkle that ADHD meds are highly valuable on the street, and many people fake symptoms to get meds to resell. A doctor whose patient is busted for reselling meds can lose his medical license, and his entire career. And possibly face criminal charges. This makes doctors (and their staff) wicked paranoid about prescribing ADHD meds.

I know all that, and mostly understand the paranoia. It was just really annoying that it tripped me up.
