My dentist visit yesterday convinced me to give breaking the soda habit another try.

This morning I got diet soda instead of regular.

So all day I've been sipping on a diet cola. And all day I've been feeling more and more... antsy. Twitchy and unsettled, for no particular reason.

Then I vaguely remember reading a study somewhere (and of course I can't find it again), suggesting there's a connection between the "hyperactive" part of ADHD and artificial sweeteners.

Oh.

I guess I really do need to develop a taste for coffee.

Tea also works.

That's what I'm trying first.

Yeah. The fake sugars are neurotransmitters. Wheee!

Perhaps some seltzer with fruit juice?

I need the caffeine.

Yeah, aspartame, not the best of artificial sweeteners. Maybe try Coke Zero instead? It has acesulfame and Splenda.

And I hate the taste slightly less. :) It's probably better than the normal diet, but I'm going to try tea for a while. I found some black tea with mint that should be pretty good.

Tazo's Zen is a good one. Green tea and lemongrass, as I recall, and quite tasty.

And I've always been a sucker for Earl Grey.

Earl Grey and Tazo's green tea are my two favorites as well. :)

I got Bigelow's Plantation Mint. I've had it before, and it's pretty good.

Try the Stash brands, I find they're the tastiest of the non-snooty teas. And their Moroccan Green Tea Mint is fabulous!

Does green tea have caffeine? I wasn't sure, which was why I went with black.

Green tea does have caffeine, although you can get it decaf too.

I've given up soda recently too, and I'm drinking Twinings Green Mint tea. It fills the caffeine gap decently, and mint tea is the only kind I'll drink.

Good to know. I like green tea slightly better than black, so once this box is gone I'll switch over.

I second the recommendation for tea. Cola doesn't have THAT much caffeine, when compared to coffee or tea. Coffee tends to have two to three times more than tea (depending on the tea & the coffee).

Tea (particularly green tea if my memory serves) also has other stimulants that are much gentler but longer lasting.

I can't do the fake sugars myself. I just don't do soda except on rare occasion.

I'm making the switch over to tea. We'll see if I can keep it up after the first box of bags are is gone. That's where I've backslid every other time I've tried to do this.

::nods::

Also, you can make "sun" tea without sunlight. Cold-steeped tea works just fine, if you give it enough time. I used to take a water bottle in the morning, toss in a couple tea bags & have "iced tea" by lunch. (Usually green tea -- it's hard to oversteep that.)

This time of year, I just like having something warm.

A helpful person on my flist pointed out to me that when all other options are unavailable, CVS will sell you caffeine in pill form. This has saved my butt on one occasion.

True enough, but somehow the idea is massively unappealing in anything other than an emergency.
