I can't help but feel slightly paranoid when I hear stifled/muffled laughter near me.

I really thought that by 11+ years out of high school I would have been able to lose some of those behaviors & thought patterns which were survival traits then, but shouldn't be needed in the real world.

I'm the same. I also have a similar reaction when I walk by a couple of people who are together and hear giggles after I've passed.

(un)Fortunately survival traits like that take a good long time to remove them. It took me a long time to eliminate those same reactions. And I still get occassional 'twitches' of the same.

With only three people in my room I always get edgy when my boss and coworker are speaking at a volume low that sounds like whispering. Makes me feel like they are scheming against me.

Yeah, that bugs me too.

That would make me edgy too.

These days it's only a strong feeling when I'm already feeling self-conscious about something.

For example, the recent changes to my hairstyle.

Still gets me, too, occasionally, and I'm farther out of high school than you are.

I'm starting to think that the best I can hope for is that the frequency will continue to decrease.
