Nov. 13, 2008 -- An American man who suffered from AIDS appears to have been cured of the disease 20 months after receiving a targeted bone marrow transplant normally used to fight leukemia, his doctors said.

I always wondered if something like that would work. It is fascinating that this is so far past the six or so month period that some scientist claim an infected person can go before it is detectable.

Obviously a marrow transplant isn't really a good option for everyone suffering from AIDS, but this does point a direction for research to go.

i heard this....... it certainly sounds promising!
i expect they will need to follow it up with treatment to make sure they have the virus load down to zero.... but its a good start!

One of the interesting side effects is that now two people have the same blood DNA.

That's actually a factor in how they made it work. They looked for a blood marrow donor that had the 1 in 1000 gene that prevents you from developing AIDS.
