Ooh, you're getting a kindle? Let me know if it's really as cool as it seems. I may need to step up campaign to get one for Christmas this year. My family seemed to all think I was kidding when I said I'd be perfectly satisfied if they all went in together and I got only that for Christmas this last year. Of course, they all think reading some weird interest that no one but me actually enjoys it, and therefore they don't understand the beauty of a kindle...

I'll let you know what I think once I've had time to play with it.

Until then you should read what [livejournal.com profile] haikujaguar has to say about hers. (http://haikujaguar.livejournal.com/tag/kindle)

Thanks and my family is going to hate you for encouraging this...but really can carry hundreds of books around at once...ooh and apparently some of my text books are available...

If you can't talk them into chipping in and buying you a Kindle, then start telling them that all you want is Amazon gift certificates.

Then, once you have enough, you use them to buy a Kindle. :-)

That would work..then they'd never have to know their money went for the evilness that is being literate. :)

Yay! We've got the 1.0 version, and love it. Hopefully you got the Tor books in .prc format when they were released last year? Also, the Baen free books are already in the right format, too.

I know about Baen books, but I hadn't heard about Tor. Do you have a link?

Also, how much of pain is it to convert from other formats? I know it's possible, but Amazon (understandably) plays down the difficulty.

The Tor ones were released once a week last year for a limited time, but are no longer available (although they periodically release new ones for a limited time).

As far as converting goes, we've never had a problem with .doc or .pdfs using Amazon's converters. And anything in prc or mobi is already converted, of course (and you can load them directly). There are other apps for converting files, too.

Thanks for the info. I saw on Amazon that some file types (including .doc) convert by emailing them to my dedicated kindle address, but I don't think it listed .pdf as one of the types. Does it work the same way, and I just didn't see it?

They mention it as an experimental feature right on the Kindle page at Amazon itself (just search for PDF on that page). We've only tried pdf text files, but they've all been fine.

I must be blind. I didn't see it at all.

Thank you!

No problem (and there's a lot of info on that page).

They look so cool. I've resisted so far - but 100 books all for the size of one paperback!!

It's a little bigger than a mass market paperback, closer to a trade paperback. But much thinner and lighter.
