The Kindle doesn't do that. When you change the print size it rearranges the text enough that it all still fits on the screen. It might be a problem with PDFs though. I'm not sure about that.

I am alas almost never "free" on weekends -- either I have to do something like work around the house, or there's some Family Event, or -- if I'm lucky -- I get to write.

No problem, and like I said Target now carries them in their electronics department, so you might be able to check one out there.
