One of the cats has a new home!
Gretchen, the older of the two cats has found a new home.  That means I only need to find a place for Susie, the 6 month old Maine Coon cat.  So that I can keep track of things more easily, I'm going to freeze comments on this post, and start sending people to a new one.  If you think you might want to take Susie, please comment on this post.

I came home from work today to a letter from the folks in the front apartment.  They said that they've unexpectedly had to leave the apartment, and everything in it.  Unfortunately, that includes two cats.

This is one of them:

The other is a smaller, fluffier version of the first.  This is her:

They're both female Maine Coons.  The larger one (1st picture) is Gretchen, approximately 18 months old.  The smaller one (2nd picture) is Susie, approx. 6 months old.  As far as I can tell from the papers the neighbors left they are both fixed and up to date on their shots.

Upon consideration, I think only Susie, the smaller one, is a Maine Coon. The larger one just doesn't seem fluffy enough to be a coon cat.

Info for practical purposes:  I, and these cats, are in Albany New York.  I'd be willing to drive an hour or so to meet somebody who's willing to take them.

If you think you might want Susie, please go to this post to let me know.

I may know some people. In the meantime, you may want to call the local vets' offices; around here they're often helping rehouse strays of sundry sorts (luckily these guys aren't feral type strays, yet). You may also, depending on how you feel about the place, put a sign up at the local pet store.

I wish I had room here! My three are just now settling their...issues. Good luck!

Feel free to pass the link around.

I'm going to take care of them in the front apartment until the landlord says they have to go. If I haven't been able to find a new home for them by then I'll contact the humane society or my vet.

What's going to happen to their stuff? And well, we can't take them in right now, mores the pity.

Tom says that legally the landlord has the right to dispose of everything in there. He can sell it, keep it, or trash it; his call. They left a very nice couch, that's almost exactly what Tom & I have been looking for, so if the landlord decides to sell it we'll probably make an offer on that. Maybe a desk, too.

Hey, attempt to get the furniture for free. Offer to take them off his hands, and if the landlord brings up cash, then offer some. Who knows, you might get a free couch.

SO pretty. And not a chance on God's green earth. I have too many yet to get rid of, myself.

I know. I can't think of anybody local who has both space for more cats and would want them.

WTF?! They just LEFT them?! Who the frigging hell does that?? I mean I can see maybe leaving the stuff - it's just stuff... but I would NEVER EVER NEVER just leave my cat!!

I wish I could take them! But I'm too far away and I don't know how Cleo would react. :(

Grr that's just... grrr.

I know, it boggles my mind too.

Part of what really creeps me out is that this letter wasn't taped to our door, or stuck in our mailbox or anything like that. It was sent through the post office. Which means that they didn't have time to make proper arrangements about anything... but they did have time to go to the post office? And I keep coming back to the question of what if that letter had gotten lost in the mail? It doesn't happen often, but it isn't unheard of either. Our landlord is pretty laid back, so who knows how long it would have been before anybody went into that apartment.

The mind boggles. Seriously!!

I mean WTF kind of low life does that?! I wish there was a way to track them down and have them prosecuted, but I don't think that the police or anybody does that for "just" animals.

Gah that makes me so angry!! I wish I could take them in. :(

The only thing that would come anywhere near justifying it in my mind would be if they were afraid for their own lives... and even then, how hard would it be to put the cats in their carrier and stop at the shelter on your way out of town?

That is what happened to Macavity. His owner just left and he and his mother and brother were left to starve to death without food and water for a month. It astounds me. Fortunately, for Tavvy at least, he bounced back and now you could never tell he was the very thin little guy I rescued from the shelter.

Oiy. Thank god they left a note.

Idiots... I shall have to do penance for thinking such evil thoughts about them.

I wish I could take someone in, but my two are my lease-limit, and they're still figuring out the hierarchy after 10 months, so I'm not hopeful of ever being able to add to the mix.

Left a note I could deal with. I'd be unhappy, but not furious. But no, they mailed a note. Which we didn't get until yesterday. They left (I'm guessing based on the postmark) on Saturday. It might even have been on Friday. That's 3+ days. And what if the post office had eaten the letter? Who knows how long it would have been before anybody noticed in that case?

If you know of anybody who'd take one or both of them, let me know.

Totally NOT excusing them, but it is the only possible thing that would make me leave my kitties behind and even then I would try to stuff them into a duffel or slip a note under your door before they shoved me into the van.

I can imagine several circumstances under which doing what they did might seem like a good idea, but all of them fall under the heading of science fiction, and none of them excuse leaving the cats without a clear home.

None of them excuse abandoning the cats without making arrangements for their care in person. Grrr. I really hope I never run into these people again.

Wow, I wish we had room for the little cuties, but we have a trio of geriatric cats that aren't dealing well with our newest addition (a cat we caught in our barn, who came pre-spayed and... well, we suspect she was a victim of foreclosure, where the people just tossed her out and figured she'd fend for herself).

I will link, though. Best of luck! You're a good person to try to deal with finding a home for them.

Hi, here via heavenscalyx. I live in Albany and am letting all the people at work know about this - one of the frequent customers at my store is letting all his work friends know as well. They are cute cats! I might be open to a 3rd cat, but unfortunately can't handle more than one new addition.

I just made a general announcement in the store. A couple people want to know if the cats are able to be split up, as they are looking for a single cat.

Date: 2010-10-30 03:13 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] comrade-cat.livejournal.com
And....a question from me. If you *are* open to splitting the cats up, is either one of them extremely cuddly? I might be able to take a 3rd cat, but I'm especially looking for a cuddly one. I'll also be telling my neighbors about the cats...

From: [identity profile] jennythe-reader.livejournal.com
It's sort of hard to tell. They're both a little skittish. I think the large one is less so.

Okay. Well I messaged you with my contact info - can I come see them? And I'll talk to my neighbor once it's light out.

If splitting them up is what it takes... it's not my first choice, but I'll do it.

WOW!

That is super sketchy! I hope those people are alright. I'm not sure what horrible things had to happen for them to just leave everything including their cats. They must have cared for them enough to send a letter. Weird. As for the cats I really wish I had the space for them. Good luck finding them a loving home. Poor dears.

If you can't take them yourself, than spreading the word would still help. Thanks for the good wishes.
