One of the cats has a new home!
Gretchen, the older of the two cats has found a new home.  That means I only need to find a place for Susie, the 6 month old Maine Coon cat.  So that I can keep track of things more easily, I'm going to freeze comments on this post, and start sending people to a new one.  If you think you might want to take Susie, please comment on this post.

I came home from work today to a letter from the folks in the front apartment.  They said that they've unexpectedly had to leave the apartment, and everything in it.  Unfortunately, that includes two cats.

This is one of them:

The other is a smaller, fluffier version of the first.  This is her:

They're both female Maine Coons.  The larger one (1st picture) is Gretchen, approximately 18 months old.  The smaller one (2nd picture) is Susie, approx. 6 months old.  As far as I can tell from the papers the neighbors left they are both fixed and up to date on their shots.

Upon consideration, I think only Susie, the smaller one, is a Maine Coon. The larger one just doesn't seem fluffy enough to be a coon cat.

Info for practical purposes:  I, and these cats, are in Albany New York.  I'd be willing to drive an hour or so to meet somebody who's willing to take them.

If you think you might want Susie, please go to this post to let me know.

I know, it boggles my mind too.

Part of what really creeps me out is that this letter wasn't taped to our door, or stuck in our mailbox or anything like that. It was sent through the post office. Which means that they didn't have time to make proper arrangements about anything... but they did have time to go to the post office? And I keep coming back to the question of what if that letter had gotten lost in the mail? It doesn't happen often, but it isn't unheard of either. Our landlord is pretty laid back, so who knows how long it would have been before anybody went into that apartment.

The mind boggles. Seriously!!

I mean WTF kind of low life does that?! I wish there was a way to track them down and have them prosecuted, but I don't think that the police or anybody does that for "just" animals.

Gah that makes me so angry!! I wish I could take them in. :(

The only thing that would come anywhere near justifying it in my mind would be if they were afraid for their own lives... and even then, how hard would it be to put the cats in their carrier and stop at the shelter on your way out of town?

That is what happened to Macavity. His owner just left and he and his mother and brother were left to starve to death without food and water for a month. It astounds me. Fortunately, for Tavvy at least, he bounced back and now you could never tell he was the very thin little guy I rescued from the shelter.
