Today is the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. 146 people, mostly young women, mostly recent immigrants, mostly Jewish and Italian, died.

Every time you complain about "regulations stifling American businesses" remember that those laws exist to prevent disasters like this one. Every time you wonder about how other countries can produce things so much cheaper than we can here, remember that it's in part because they don't have laws to protect workers from this sort of tragedy.

Over-regulation does stifle American business. The mere existence of regulation is not prima facie over-regulation.

My sound bite response for discussions related to over-regulation (among other ills related to the mentality) is thus:

The zero-defect mentality is a defect.

It seems like the in the current environment most people who are anti-over-regulation would disagree with your second sentence.
