What's the best book you've read this month?

The best I've read was Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway. It's surreal science fiction about the devastating aftermath of a war in which horrible weapons were used. The characters are wonderful and the author throws in some really cool and unexpected twists.

You know I've been shouting this book from the rooftops. Her "Orphan's Tales" series is really good too.

Also started on "Never Mind the Pollacks" -- about as far from the other book as you can get, a rock 'n' roll satire. Very funny and quick, breezy reading.

Palimpsest is on my wishlist over at Amazon, so I'm sure I'll get to it at some point.

The library has Orphan's Tales, but I can't quite make my mind up about them. I keep hearing good things, but it hasn't grabbed me.

That last one sounds funny. Good brain candy.

Yeah, it's a good palate-cleanser after "Palimpsest."

Can I get back to you later in the month? Right now I'd have to go with "Island in the Sea of Time" because it's the only book I've finished since the beginning of the month.

Island in the Sea of Time is a pretty good book. If you've only read one this month, it was a good choice.

To sound edjabuhkated I should say Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses, but I had ALOT more fun reading Small Favor by Jim Butcher. I really enjoy Harry Dresden. He is a clever twist on the smart alec loner detective and Butcher's supporting characters are unique and very well developed.

I read Satanic Verses a few years ago. The only thing I remember about it is that I liked it. I should probably read it again.

I read the first two Dresden books. They were decent, but they didn't grab me. I'll probably get around to the rest of the series at some point.

As highly praised as Rushdie is Satanic Verses is the only book of his I enjoyed. All the others have fallen victim to my 100 page rule.

If it doesn't grab you in the first hundred pages, it's gone?

I figure any author worth their salt should be able to grab my attention by then. If not then back to the library they go.
